These striking alphabets are illustrations for the lead article “The Penrose Survey” in the Penrose Annual 1970, no. 63. The dust jacket of the edition also featured, against a hot pink background, 2 of the alphabet designs.
The illustrations are from David Kindersley’s book “Variations on a theme of twenty six letters”, a book published to coincide the with opening of Kindersley’s fascinating alphabet exhibition at The Folio Society, London, 1969.
“David Kindersley 1915 – 1995 was a British stone letter-carver and typeface designer, and the founder of the Kindersley Workshop (later the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop). His carved plaques and inscriptions in stone and slate can be seen on many churches and public buildings in the United Kingdom. Kindersley was a designer of the Octavian font for Monotype Imaging in 1961, and he and his third wife Lida Lopes Cardozo designed the main gates for the British Library” (Wikipedia)
