I discovered this beautifully printed illustration in the Penrose Annual of 1961. It is a reproduction of a painting by British Artist Rigby Graham (1931-2015), and is used as an advertisement for Linson Papers Ltd, and is called “Time Fantasy”.
The colour is simply glorious, as is the gilding (which sadly doesn’t show up well on this scan).
Rigby Graham was an accomplished British Artist and you can read more about him in his Guardian Obituary HERE as well as on the link above.
Printed on White Buckram Linson, Engraved by Bowers & Freeman, Leicester, and printed by Lowe & Carr Leicester in 6 colour offset lithography.
Many of the advertisements in the Penrose Annuals were of similar very high quality, and used the work of known artists and designers to demonstrate the quality of paper, ink, printing technology, etc.
Its wonderful to find quality gems from the past like this hidden away in trade journals from the 20th Century.
